Design for a Literature and Film Course Using a Mixed (Learner and Teacher-Centered) Approach

This study aims to mitigate the difficulties (e.g., lack of clarity, confusion, and resistance) implementing a studentcentered learning course in traditionally teacher-centered context (Kim, 2015) by adding elements direct instruction student-centered curriculum. In this mixed-method (student teacher-centered) elective course, thirty Korean intermediate university EFL students from multiple disciplines chose class materials–the novel <i>Charlie Chocolate Factory</i> (Dahl & Schindelman, 1964) its two film adaptations (Burton, 2005; Stuart, 1971). The participants then designed implemented project-based activities as well means assessment while instructor facilitated delivered lectures mini lessons based on students’ needs. To analyze student teacher perceptions approach description their selfefficacy, researcher applied qualitative analysis journals post-course interviews. results showed that can lead several benefits including authentic an improved sense self-efficacy teachers students. One unexpected result was satisfaction with low-stakes atmosphere created background music played during group activities. Some limitations such workload, accuracy, small sample size are described.
